Le Printemps des migrations au Secours Catholiques pour la projection du film « Si tu es un homme » réalisé par Simon Panay, présent en visio.

Le film « Si tu es un homme » est un documentaire suivant la vie d’un jeune Burkinabé de 13 ans nommé Opio. C’est un adolescent travaillant aux mines, il ne gagne qu’un sac de cailloux par mois. Son père et lui prennent la décision de lui faire intégrer une formation professionnelle. Cependant, la famille n’a pas les ressources nécessaires pour payer les frais d’inscription de l’école. Étant l’aîné de la famille, Opio prends la décision de demander à son patron de descendre dans les mines afin de gagner plus de sac de cailloux et de peut-être tomber sur une pépite d’or – Une chance pour peut-être aider financièrement sa famille. 
À la suite de la projection de « Si tu es un homme », le réalisateur, Simon Panay a confié :  

« Ça fait 12 ans que je fais des documentaires en Afrique de l’Ouest. J’ai fait presque tous mes documentaires au Burkina. C’est un pays que je connais bien, car j’ai vécu quelques années là-bas. C’est un documentaire qu’on a tourné de 2018 à 2020, la situation politique était un petit mieux que maintenant. C’était déjà très compliqué à l’époque : on tournait dans la zone centrale du pays, pas très loin de Koudougou. C’était la dernière région accessible, où il y avait encore assez peu d’activités djihadistes, parce que c’était très sécurisé. A chaque entrée et sortie de ville il y avait des checkpoints militaires qui contrôlaient les papiers d’identité, regardaient s’il y avait des armes, etc. Maintenant, ça serait impossible d’y retourner car, malheureusement, plus aucune zone n’est épargnée par l’activité djihadiste. Aller dans ces zones, c’est se mettre en danger soi et mettre en danger les personnes que l’on rencontre, mais j’ai toujours des contacts avec les personnes avec qui on a filmé, Opio le premier. »  

Après l’introduction du réalisateur, la parole a été donnée au public. Une opportunité pour eux, d’en savoir plus sur la vie d’Opio, le contexte socio-politique du Burkina-Faso ou bien la difficulté à rentrer dans l’intime d’une famille et d’une personne en particulier. 
Simon Panay répondant, sur Zoom, aux questions du public.

Comment as-tu pu te lier aussi intimement de sorte à rentrer dans son village, dans sa famille ?  

« Je l’ai rencontré quand je faisais un projet de collections sur les minerais artisanaux, ça fait 10 ans que je travaillais sur ce sujet, c’est un monde que je connais bien. J’ai rencontré Opio, il a quelque chose de particulier, il a un regard très intense et il est très volontaire. Entre le moment où je le rencontre et où on commence à filmer, il se passe presque 2 mois, cela nous a permis de tisser un lien de confiance, de lui expliquer ce qu’on allait raconter dans le documentaire, et à son entourage également. Une fois que la confiance est là, que l’on a créé quelque chose humainement, là, on peut commencer à travailler. Sur ce genre de documentaire, il est primordial d’établir cette confiance, si on n’a pas cette confiance, on crée des barrières, des gènes. Parfois, il y a des choses qui nous avons filmé comme les conflits familiaux notamment entre Opio et ses parents  : c’est touchant de voir qu’ils nous ont laissé montrer ce genre de scène. » 
 

Comment se gère l’arrivée à l’étranger avec tout le matériel audiovisuel (caméra, micro) et la situation vis-à-vis de la guerre ?  

“C’est toujours nécessairement délicat, c’est la même question qui peuvent se poser des personnes qui voyagent avec des sacs à dos alors que le salaire moyen du pays dans lequel ils vont est de 30 euros. Ce sont des contrastes parce qu’on a forcément des modes de vie très différents, mais ce n’est pas nécessairement un problème avec les gens. C’est plus un problème dans nos têtes à nous, mais pas à eux.”  

 

Vous avez parlé de mine d’or, qui sont les propriétaires de ces mines d’or ? 

« Cette mine-là est une mine artisanale, mais qui est légale,  Il y a une autorisation d’exploitation. Mais  la plupart des mines sont illégales. Cette mine n’est possédée par personne, ni par l’état, ni par un groupe étranger privé. C’est une somme de petits patrons (la plupart sont des burkinabés et des nigérians.). Il y a des centaines de trous, chaque trou appartient à un patron qui a payé un droit d’exploitation. Il y a des centaines de patrons différents, et chaque équipe est reliée à un patron. Il y a une certaine omerta à ceux qui arrivent à gagner de l’argent ou non puisque si ça se sait que quelqu’un a eu de l’or, il s’expose à des attaques, a des vols. »

Qui a le droit de descendre dans la mine ? Est-ce que les équipes payent le patron ? Est-ce qu’il y a une taxe pour descendre ? Une fois qu’il est en bas, est-ce qu’il peut prendre tout ce qu’il trouve, comment ça se passe ? 

« En réalité, ce qu’il se passe, c’est que le patron paye le forage, il paye les outils, la dynamite, mais il ne verse pas de salaires à ces équipes. Ça fonctionne en sac de cailloux. Chaque mois, on extrait un certain nombre de sacs, 50 % vont directement au patron et les autres sacs sont partagés à l’équipe. Selon les efforts de chaque membre de l’équipe, ils peuvent avoir un, ou plusieurs sacs. Par exemple, ceux qui vont dans la mine ont plus de sacs, car c’est plus difficile et plus risqué. La part la plus petite est pour ceux qui font du travail dit « de petites mains », c’est-à-dire remonter les cailloux.
En réalité, dans ces sacs, il n’y en a jamais beaucoup. En moyenne, il gagne 6-7 euros par sac, jamais vraiment moins de 3-4 et jamais plus que 13-14 euros. En moyenne, s’ils ont bien travaillé, ils peuvent toucher 40 euros, ce qui est l’équivalent du salaire moyen au Burkina-Faso.  
Il y a toujours cette idée, pour les patrons, qu’ils vont tomber sur la pépite d’or, qui va faire changer leur vie. Cependant, cette pensée est irrationnelle. Il y a certains endroits du monde (Amérique du Nord, Australie…) où il y a des pépites, mais en Afrique de l’Ouest, sur ces mines d’or en particulier, il y a une part d’or qui est très mince. Le procédé de travail fait qu’ils ne peuvent pas extraire énormément d’or. C’est extrêmement long de remplir un sac, il faut au moins 1 heure, pour récupérer de la galerie jusqu’à la surface puis le broyer à la main […]  
L’adrénaline de potentiellement gagner, une sorte d’addiction se crée. Certains sont dans ce milieu depuis 15 ans et n’ont jamais perdu espoir de trouver cette pépite. C’est le piège de ce monde, plus on reste, plus on sacrifie de temps, d’argent et sa santé et plus c’est difficile de s’asseoir et d’accepter tout ce qu’on a perdu. Ils se disent que c’est dommage d’avoir fait tout ça, si je peux potentiellement gagner demain, ou la semaine prochaine. » 
 

Qui est derrière la caméra quand vous filmez dans les galeries ?

“C’était moi qui descendais filmer avec Opio. C’était une période assez longue (6 mois). On descendait presque tous les jours avec Opio dans la galerie. C’était une période assez anxiogène parce que je craignais qu’il se blesse, et j’avais peur pour moi aussi, sans rien vous cacher, ce sont des conditions de tournages difficiles. On se lève le matin avec un peu la boule au ventre, car ce sont des endroits dangereux, il y a des risques de glissades, de manque d’oxygène, si on se casse une cheville dans cette galerie, c’est presque impossible de sortir.”   

Combien de temps vous restiez dans la galerie ? Est -ce qu’il fallait porter des masques à cause de la poussière ?

“Ça dépendait des galeries, en moyenne 5h, mais c’est bizarre parce qu’on perd la notion du temps, parce qu’il n’y a pas de repères, c’est assez étrange. Parfois, on remonte, il est minuit alors que j’étais persuadée qu’il était 15 heures. Il n’y a rien pour ramener de l’oxygène sous terre, aucun système de ventilation ni de bouteille d’oxygène. Il faut être vigilant, car beaucoup meurent d’asphyxies sans s’en rendre compte parce que ça arrive petit à petit, et ça enlève de la lucidité et fait peu à peu plonger les personnes dans l’euphorie. C’est un signe pour eux qu’il faut sortir le plus vite possible pour ne pas mourir d’asphyxie.   
Pour la poussière, c’est très poussiéreux dans les galeries puisqu’ils utilisent des perforateurs. Ce sont des environnements extrêmement poussiéreux. Il n’y a pas vraiment de masque, j’essayais de me protéger les voies respiratoires comme je pouvais. Alors certes, c’est en surface, mais ceux qui travaillent mangent énormément de poussières et je pense que la poussière, c’est la première cause de décès, ils ont presque tous de problèmes pulmonaires. Opio le premier. Et qu’ils ne traitent pas qu’ils n’ont pas d’accès aux soins. C’est un monde dans lequel on meur très jeune. Une fois qu’on rentre dans ce monde, on y reste jusqu’à la fin et c’est un monde dans lequel on meurt très jeune. C’est le cocktail de risque, il y a un taux de risque assez élevé : il utilise le mercure pour séparer l’or et les impuretés, mais le mercure se retrouve dans le sol. L’eau qu’eux boivent quotidiennement c’est de l’eau qu’ils extraient du sous-sol qui est extrêmement pollué au mercure. Ce sont des dangers qu’ils s’exposent quotidiennement.” 

Le motif économique de leur pays, peut-il expliquer que les jeunes inspirent à l’Eldorado européen ou est-ce que pour vous il y a d’autres raisons ? 

“La moitié du pays est contrôlée par des djihadistes. Il n’y a pas vraiment eu de vagues migratoires au Burkina, je pense que c’est assez culturel, il y a un espoir d’une vie meilleure en quittant sa vie et sa famille au Burkina pour aller en Europe. On retrouve un peu la même chose dans le monde dans l’orpaillage. D’aller tenter sa chance, un peu d’aventure et un espoir de trouver une vie meilleure, qui est un peu insensé puisqu’ils ne le trouveront pas, car il y a des légendes urbaines qui poussent à partir, mais ce sont des espoirs vains. Tout le monde parle de ces gens (ceux qui ont réussi), mais ce sont des mensonges inventés par les patrons, pour recruter plus de monde. Par exemple, certains patrons dans des bars fument dans des billets de 10 milles francs et disent aux jeunes étudiants que puisqu’ils sont assez riches, fumer dans un billet ça ne les dérange pas. C’est une technique pour recruter plus de jeunes aux mines. Les étudiants lâchent leurs études du jour au lendemain, car ils se disent qu’ils sont des chances de devenir plus riches qu’avec leurs études et donc il y a des jeunes qui sont sur la voie de l’accomplissement, mais qui lâchent tout pour aller à la mine. Beaucoup d’orpailleurs qui me posaient des questions à Paris ou sur l’argent, car il convertissait également les Francs et l’euro (Avec 30 euros au Burkina, on vit. En France, non).” 

Est-ce que c’est Opio qui a décidé de quitter le CE1 ou est-ce que c’est par la pression familiale ? 

“L’histoire d’Opio est assez compliquée. Jusqu’à la fin du CE1, il allait à l’école et il n’y avait pas du tout le projet de la quitter . Son père eut une seconde épouse avec qu’il a eu des enfants. Il y a une année, au village, où les récoltes n’étaient pas bonnes. Durant l’année de son CE2, puisqu’Opio est un des ainées, il s’est senti obligé, […] c’était comme un devoir et une responsabilité, de commencer à travailler pour soutenir et soulager financièrement sa famille d’une bouche à nourrir.Il est parti à l’âge de 8 ans, au seul endroit où un enfant qui ne sait pas parler français peut avoir du travail : la galerie. 
Opio l’a extrêmement mal vécu, parce que c’est difficile : ses parents ne l’ont pas mis à la porte, mais en tant qu’aîné, il a senti cette responsabilité. C’est un malaise qui existe entre Opio et ses parents puisqu’ils disent que c’est lui qui a pris la décision, et qu’il peut revenir quand il veut, mais Opio sait, que ça n’est pas possible, ça l’est seulement si les récoltes sont suffisantes pour tout le monde. Opio sent qu’il y a une pression sur lui pour qu’il ramène de l’argent. Ça crée beaucoup de conflits, de paradoxe et d’incompréhension entre eux. »

En ce qui concerne la scène où le père oriente son fils vers une formation professionnel :est -ce que c’est une fiction ou une vraie volonté de la famille  ?

 « J’ai ma petite idée sur le sujet, … J’ai l’impression que si la caméra n’avait pas été présente, je ne suis pas certain, qu’il aurait fait cette démarche, je pense qu’il l’a fait car il avait peur d’être jugé. La caméra a une influence dans plein de choses : les dialogues, les choix, les personnes filmées jouent un rôle. 
De manière plus générale, la question de l’éducation dans ces zones-là, est difficile. Dans les grandes villes, l’école est bénéfique :envoyer ses enfants à l’école signifie les cultiver intellectuellement et les faire élever dans la société. Alors que dans les zones rurales, l’école, est vue comme “un truc de blanc”, c’est très abstrait. La plupart des familles voient ça comme une perte d’argent. Il y a des zones où c’est difficile d’amener les enfants vers l’école, notamment à cause de ces préjugés. Lorsqu’il y a une mine d’or dans la ville, c’est un aimant beaucoup plus puissant, que celui de l’école, parce que les promesses de l’école sont vues comme beaucoup trop lointaines pour eux. » 

Que devient Opio à l’heure actuelle ? 

“Une fois le tournage terminé, ona pu pour l’aider financièrement, en lui payant notamment les frais de scolarité, ce qu’on ne pouvait pas faire durant le documentaire pour des raisons d’éthique puisqu’on montre la réalité telle qu’elle est. Je trouve que c’est important de la montrer cette réalité du monde. Il y a des millions et des millions d’enfants qui sont dans la même situation qu’Opio, et montrer le travail de ces enfants via un documentaire retraçant la vie d’un de ces enfants, c’est vraiment important. Malheureusement, pour Opio, l’école n’était pas pour lui, pour plusieurs raisons. Il a voulu abandonner l’école pour l’addiction à l’or, mais il était également trop en retard. À la fin du documentaire, une séquence montre Opio à un cours de rattrapage où il est très en retard, son niveau de français est faible comparé aux autres. Il comprend très peu le français alors que tous les cours sont dispensées dans cette langue. Il s’est découragé et il ne voulait plus entendre parler d’école. On a réfléchi à un projet qui pourrait l’aider donc on a monté une cagnotte pour l’aider à acheter une moto remorquée qui est un véhicule extrêmement utilisé dans ces zones reculées qu’il lui permet de mener une activité de transport et de mieux gagner sa vie. Il a exprimé sa volonté de travailler encore dans la mine. Il va bien et il a énormément grandi. On est soulagé qu’il ne travaille plus dans les galeries souterraines ça nous inquiétait durant et après le tournage.”    

Opio durant le film a l’air très fort, on ne voit pas ses émotions sauf quand il descend pour la première fois, ce sont des petits moments de fragilité qu’on arrive à percevoir, mais pour toi est-ce que toi aussi, tu as ressenti ces moments de vulnérabilité ?  

“Le monde dans lequel il est rentré à 8 ans n’est pas un monde où tu peux montrer tes faiblesses donc il a dû se construire une carapace parce que par exemple, il y a des gens qui s’entretuent pour de l’or, il côtoie la mort quotidiennement. Il s’est construit une vraie carapace qu’il ne quitte jamais vraiment. Je crois que le seul moment où j’ai vu Opio faire tomber sa carapace, c’est quand on est revenu 1 an après le tournage, on avait organisé une projection en pleine-air du documentaire. Je crois que c’est la seule fois que j’avais vu Opio touché et ému. Je le connais bien, on s’est côtoyé pendant 2 ans, il y avait ce mystère autour de lui, car on ne sait jamais vraiment ce qu’il se pense. Il se passe beaucoup de choses dans son regard, et ça se sent.”
